You wouldn’t wait in a slow moving line at the grocery store if you knew there was a shorter faster line next to you would you? The same thinking applies to your website, customers won’t stick around very long if your website is too slow moving. Thankfully there are a variety of free website speed testing tools out there to help you out.
One of the speed tests we use is at http://tools.pingdom.com this handy tool will allow you to just type in your domain name and hit go and get a wealth of knowledge back in regards to the speed of your website. Hit the settings just below the domain box to pick a location if you want more accurate results based on a closer server to your area.
The results are broken down for things like the initial connection to your website, loading the css files and more and also gives you back a size of how much data was being transferred for that file or resource.
Lastly if you scroll all the way down to the bottom you can see the key legend that will help you understand the color coding used above, this will help you understand if your website hosting provider is causing the slowness or maybe it is a large file or script on your website. Try it today and see how you can improve your slow website!
